So a Contortionist Walks Into a Bar...

…And says “Ow!”

I hope last week’s What Color Are Your Glasses? has been helpful to you since we convened.

Next week is the beginning of a series on physical  flexibility.  Like my first foray into nightshades I thought this would be a relatively quick topic to cover but as soon as I started looking into this it was obvious to me I could not do this in one shot.  Over the next several weeks we’ll be delving into the effects of resistance training on flexibility, the difference between static stretching and dynamic warm-up as pre exercise prep and the role of genetics on overall flexibility.  If you have any questions regarding this topic please let me know.  It may be its own newsletter!

For a sneak peek into next week, a preliminary study from 2011 shows that full range resistance training improved flexibility just as much as static stretching.  It’s a preliminary study due to the small sample size and short duration of the experiment.  The researchers postulate if a study of longer duration and larger sample size were to be conducted the resistance training group could potentially surpass the static stretching group in terms of improved flexibility.

I’m sure it's no surprise to many of you but it’s true, I’m advocating for resistance training.  For those of you who believe they “should” stretch more to improve flexibility, I’m offering you an alternative.

Please check back next Thursday for more.

Until next we meet.
